A total of 16,348 records were retrieved from the Scopus database, covering publications from 1964 to 2024. From this corpus, the 100 most-cited documents were selected and subjected to detailed scientometric analysis using Microsoft Excel for data organisation, Biblioshny for bibliometric indicators and thematic classification, and VOSviewer for network visualisation. The analysis revealed that Library Services is the most dominant research theme, accounting for 18% of the highly cited literature, with a frequent focus on Web 2.0 tools, innovative service models and AI-based applications. User Information Behaviour followed at 16%, reflecting a strong emphasis on user needs and satisfaction. Other prominent categories included the Role of Libraries (11%), Library Staff (10%), Social Media Platforms (8%), and Information Literacy (7%). Emerging technical themes such as Recommender Systems, Library Evaluation, and Research Data Management each accounted for 6–7% of the corpus. In contrast, traditional topics such as Library Infrastructure, Search Techniques, and Collection Development received comparatively limited attention, suggesting a shift in scholarly focus. The findings demonstrate a clear transition toward user-centred, digitally integrated, and strategically adaptive research in academic librarianship. However, the rise of Article Processing Charges (APCs) levied by publishers to cover operational costs in the OA model poses significant challenges, particularly for researchers from lower-middle-income countries like India. This study investigates the interplay between OA and APCs, focusing on the Indian academic and research landscape. It evaluates the effectiveness of mechanisms such as fee waivers, discounts, and transformative agreements in alleviating the financial burden of APCs and enabling equitable access to OA publishing. This research aims to examine current trends in OA adoption in India, identify barriers to participation in APC-based publishing, and propose solutions for Indian researchers to increase access to OA. This study incorporates an approach which is a combination of exhaustive literature review, global and national OA policies analysis, and case studies from Indian institutions that have successfully negotiated agreements with publishers. Key findings highlight the disparities in APC costs across disciplines and publishers, with fees ranging from $8 to USD 5,000. While fee waivers and discounts are available, their effectiveness is limited by cumbersome application processes and a lack of awareness among eligible researchers. Transformative agreements, wherein institutions negotiate lump-sum payments to cover subscription and OA publishing costs, emerge as a promising solution but remain in their infancy in India. The study also underscores the role of government and institutional policies in promoting OA publishing. Initiatives like the "One Nation One Subscription" (ONOS) policy and developing a national Green OA repository represent positive steps. However, significant gaps remain in addressing funding challenges and ensuring the widespread adoption of OA practices. Case studies of Indian institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), demonstrate the potential of negotiated agreements to reduce APC costs and increase OA publications. However, these agreements often have limited scope and require greater coordination between institutions, publishers, and policymakers. The study concludes that while OA presents significant opportunities for democratizing access to knowledge, the financial burden of APCs remains a critical barrier for Indian researchers. A multifaceted approach is essential to address these challenges, including developing a comprehensive national OA policy, increased institutional support for APC funding, wider adoption of transformative agreements, and enhanced awareness of alternative OA models such as Diamond and Platinum OA. By implementing these strategies, India can strengthen its position in the global OA landscape, ensuring its researchers have equitable access to publish and disseminate their work. This research contributes to the on-going discourse on OA publishing, offering actionable insights for policymakers, institutions, and researchers striving to create a more inclusive and sustainable academic publishing ecosystem.
2025-09-03T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Md Nurul Alam, Anup Kumar Das https://www.jcitation.org/index.php/jdscics/article/view/230 South Africa’s Highly Cited Research on Medicinal Plants: A Scientometric Exploration of Impact and Innovation 2025-08-29T07:05:25+00:00 Mueen Ahamed KK mueen.ahmed@gmail.com Chaman Sab M mueen.ahmed@gmail.com
Background and Aim: This bibliometric study investigated High-impact Publications (HCPs) in South Africa’s Medicinal Plants research from 2021 to 2025. The low intake of predatory articles on social media can be considered as a parameter in identifying the deceptive journals. Predatory journals were present on 18 different platforms, with a higher presence on Mendeley, accounting for 234467 (88.13%) mentions, and Twitter, with 20949 (7.87%) mentions. The articles from the journal "Aging" received the highest social attention, with 54,748 mentions for its 4,720 articles. The geographical results showed that web discussions about the questionable articles were predominantly from English-speaking countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Also, journal characteristics such as impact factor, quartile, indexing status, were also identified, along with retraction time delays and patterns. The study indicates an increase in academic retractions with 57.55% of papers between 2021-2024. This trajectory shows the increasing requirement for research integrity mechanisms. The main reasons for retractions are fake peer review (1007 papers), plagiarism (880), and data manipulation/falsification (746), which shows areas that can be targeted for improving the effectiveness of peer review and data validation in research outputs. The study also highlights that the eight major publishers, including Springer, Elsevier, and Taylor and Francis, have accounted for 73.78% of the retractions. When looking at the retraction time, the majority (86.29%) was done within five years of publication and 38.27% within the first year. Moreover, research articles (67.40%) were found to be the most common type of retraction. This study presents a quantitative analysis of academic retractions by Indian scholars to examine the trajectory in misconduct, the role of publishers, and the characteristics of journals involved in the retractions. Based on the causes of retractions, the study offers suggestions on how to reduce the incidence of retractions to enhance India’s academic standing in the global arena.
2025-09-03T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Beeresh N Gundur, Sampath Kumar B T https://www.jcitation.org/index.php/jdscics/article/view/206 Gender Inequality in Scientometric Research: A Case Study of Scientometrics Journal 2025-07-28T05:53:21+00:00 Beeresh N Gundur beeresh.isro@gmail.com Sampath Kumar B T sampathbt201@gmail.com
This study examines gender inequalities in research productivity and citation impact among first authors in Scientometrics journal from 2020 to 2024. It examines the representation of male and female first authors, their research output, and citation patterns, shedding light on persistent gender gaps in scientometric research. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using data from the Scopus database, encompassing 1734 articles and review papers published in Scientometrics journal. The gender of first authors was identified using the Namsor platform. Research productivity, citation counts, and single-authored contributions were analyzed to assess gender-based trends. Male authors dominated research productivity as first authors (64.01%) compared to female authors (35.99%). Similarly, 71% of single authored publications were observed by male researchers. Analysis of citations also shown the discrepancies like male first authors acknowledged 69% of total citations while 31% of share by female first authors. Apart from that, 75% of citations were noticed by male single authors compare to female single authors with 25% only. These trends reveal the underrepresentation of female participation in research productivity and citation impact. The study assesses the contribution and active involvement of female authorship in research productivity and impact compare to male counterpart considering the reputed journal indexed in Scopus with Citescore 7.2. The observations and findings would be valuable and perceptive for the researchers involved in scientometric studies.
2025-09-03T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Beeresh N Gundur, Sampath Kumar B T
